Exploring The Northern Rhone Wine Region

Yesterday we spent a lovely afternoon exploring Northern Rhone wine region of France with Olivier Delalande of Kanpai Tours.

Each time we come to France we try to learn a little more about the French wine culture – and yesterday we learnt a lot.  Olivier is friendly, patient and knowledgeable.

After leaving from Lyon, our tour included stops to view and understand the very pretty Northern Rhone region. The majority of the vines (predominantly Syrah, Voignier, Marsanne and Roussanne) grow on rocky hillsides, and we could not believe how steep those hills are.  Safe to say that the vines grow in very different terrains than in Australia.

The tour also made time for tastings at 2 family owned wineries.  These tastings allowed our tour group of 6 to learn more about the French concept of ‘terroir’ (the impact the earth and the climate have on the grapes) and to taste some wines that we would not have normally tried.

We really enjoyed the tour – it gave us a very different perspective on this part of France.

Until next time – au revoir.
