Frenchify Your Friday – Number 34

Frenchify you Friday with a glass of Lillet.

Via a gift from a couple of gorgeous friends, I was recently introduced to Lillet, the Bordeaux wine based apéritif that comes in blanc and rouge varieties as well as a rosé version.

Now I know many of you would be rolling your eyes right now and wondering how this self proclaimed francophile has managed to escape the charms of this refreshing beverage until this point in time.

I can offer no decent explanations except to say that I am kind of boring when it comes to apéritifs. Cocktails are a rarely on my radar. A glass of white wine (or Provencal rosé in summer) and champagne on special occasions are about as exciting as things get.

Until now.

I’ve been experimenting with the rosé version of this apéritif, whose maker was founded way back in 1872. Not as dry as your standard rose and far more floral (a fact that I’m guessing is due to the herbs and flowers that are infused into the wine through the maturation process), the rosé variety of Lillet is lovely served over ice.

Alternatively, it also blends well with pink grapefruit flavoured mixers, garnished with either slices of orange or grapefruit.

Lillet seems like a perfect accompaniment to hot weather – something we’ve seen a bit of here in Melbourne in recent times. But I’m guessing this classic apéritif would also be welcomed in cooler weather too, given the orange flavours that burst on the palate.

Why not Frenchify Your Friday this week with a little glass of Lillet? It certainly seems like a refreshing way to bring a dose of French inspiration to your Friday.

And if you have a favourite Lillet recipe, be sure to share it in the comments below.

All the best for a fabulous Friday.

Until next time – au revoir.
